I was especially interested in your interest in "junk DNA." Dr. Susumo Ohno, the originator of the term was a colleague of mine at the City of Hope Medical Center. He was fascinated by the fact that only 1-2 percent of the human genome coded for proteins and thus seemed to be useful. He called the rest "junk." It is only very recently that we now know that the vast majority of the human genome is transcribed into RNA, even though only a tiny minority of that is messenger RNA. We now know that this RNA plays a major role in regulating genes. That finally answers the question Ohno asked, if it is junk why is it not selected against in evolution? We always knew the answer was that it played some function. I was amazed to see many concepts mentioned that I had been reading about on my own over the years, such as Strassman's book and DMT / ayahuasca, The Spirit Molecule. I have read this book twice and also The Cosmic Serpent by Jeremy Narby. The leader of my cancer support group was trained in Mind-Body approach to healing and I read Molecules of Emotion by Candace Pert and The Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton. Somewhere in the reading I read that the so-called junk DNA in the human genome had been analyzed by a computer program that looks for elements of a language and was found to contain enough structure to constitue such a result. What that means is yet to be determed. I congratulate Dr. Comings for again producing a very studious and useful book for both the layman and professional, giving us a look at the state of the knowledge Man has acquired about himself and how his brain works. By far the most interesting book I have EVER read. David Comings, MD has a way of turning dry science into a sumptuous meal. I never read and fall asleep doing so. Audio books are my thing and perhaps the doctor will publish it that way too. HOWEVER, I slept little last night and could not put it down. The book and topic is totally enthralling. The most capable introduction of 20th and 21st century science, by Dr. Comings, into an age-old theological question is a joy to read.
